Provident Metals vs JM Bullion – Which is best for investors?

Every week, someone on GoldInvestorResearch.com asks us to settle the same question: should I buy from Provident Metals or JM Bullion?

Both companies operate out of the Dallas, Texas area, and both consistently rank near the top whenever someone searches for a competitively priced online bullion dealer.

What trips up a lot of shoppers is that these two are not independent rivals fighting for your business. JM Bullion bought Provident Metals back in 2019, and both brands now sit under the same corporate parent.

That relationship changes how you should read a head to head comparison, so we built this guide around what actually affects an order: pricing, product selection, shipping terms, and how each company treats customers after checkout.

Key Points

  • Provident Metals and JM Bullion are both owned by A-Mark Precious Metals, though each runs its own website, inventory, and customer service team.
  • Shipping thresholds and payment discounts are nearly identical between the two dealers, so the real decision usually comes down to product catalog and documented customer experience.

One Parent Company, Two Separate Storefronts

Provident Metals launched in 2009 in Dallas and built its early reputation as "The People's Bullion Dealer," positioning itself as a lower cost alternative to bigger, more established names.

JM Bullion started two years later, in 2011, also out of Dallas, and grew faster, eventually building a larger catalog and a bigger marketing footprint. In August 2019, JM Bullion quietly acquired Provident Metals. The deal wasn't publicly disclosed until that October.

A-Mark Precious Metals, a NASDAQ listed wholesale bullion company trading under the ticker AMRK, had already held a minority stake in JM Bullion since 2014, and it completed the purchase of the remaining shares in 2021.

That means Provident Metals, JM Bullion, and a handful of other bullion sites, including Silver.com, Gold.com, GoldPrice.org, and SilverPrice.org, now all report up to the same parent company.

This matters for one practical reason. A lot of "compare and contrast" content online treats Provident and JM Bullion as if they were scrappy, unrelated competitors racing each other to the lowest price.

They aren't, not anymore. Provident kept its own website, its own pricing engine, and its own support line after the acquisition, so you are still choosing between two divisions of the same company rather than two fully independent dealers with opposing incentives.

Pricing and Payment Discounts

Every online bullion dealer charges spot price plus a premium, and the premium is where the real competition happens.

On a standard one ounce American Gold Eagle, JM Bullion's premium over spot has typically run in the 4% to 8% range for check, ACH, or wire buyers, according to pricing data compiled by RatesChaser in July 2026.

Silver premiums run higher as a percentage of the total price: popular items like the American Silver Eagle often carry 15% to 25% premiums over spot, since the per coin handling cost stays roughly fixed while the dollar value of the metal is much lower.

Provident Metals has generally marketed itself on lower headline pricing. A review from Gold Investing Research, published in April 2026, priced Provident's gold products at roughly 4.9% over spot, in line with or slightly below JM Bullion's range.

Where the two dealers line up almost exactly is payment discounts, which is one more sign of shared corporate DNA. Pay by bank wire, ACH transfer, or paper check at either dealer and you receive a 4% discount off the listed price.

Pay with Bitcoin or another supported cryptocurrency through BitPay and both dealers knock 3% off. Pay by credit card, debit card, or PayPal at either company and you pay the standard listed price, since both pass along the processing fees that come with card transactions.

Product Selection

This is where the two brands actually diverge. JM Bullion carries a broader catalog, somewhere north of 5,000 individual SKUs by industry estimates, spanning government minted coins from the US Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, and Perth Mint, bars from major refiners in sizes from one gram up to 100 ounces, and a long list of silver rounds.

Numismatic and rare coin depth is not the company's strength; that inventory sits with dedicated coin dealers instead.

Provident Metals runs a tighter catalog focused on:

  • Government coins such as American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and Austrian Philharmonics
  • Proprietary silver rounds designed and sold exclusively through Provident, including its long running Prospector series
  • Generic and branded silver and gold bars from mints like Sunshine Minting and Asahi
  • A smaller but active selection of platinum, palladium, and copper products

If you want the widest possible selection in one checkout, JM Bullion wins that comparison outright.

If you specifically want Provident's in house round designs, or you simply prefer shopping a smaller, more curated catalog, Provident still has a reason to exist as its own brand.

Shipping and Order Policies

Shipping terms are close enough to identical that they shouldn't be the deciding factor, though the small differences are worth knowing before checkout.

Free shipping threshold$199 or more$199 or more
Shipping fee below threshold$9.95 flat rate$7.99 flat rate

One Provident policy deserves extra attention. Lost package claims must be reported within three business days of the tracking information showing delivery.

That's a tight window compared to some competitors, and a handful of customer complaints specifically cite it as a pain point when a package shows delivered but never arrives.

If you order from Provident, check your tracking the day it's marked delivered, not a week later.

Customer Reviews and Reputation

Both companies carry an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Beyond that, their review profiles look different depending on which platform you check.

Provident Metals shows a Trustpilot score in the low 3s out of 5 across roughly 3,600 reviews, alongside a BBB customer rating above 4.5 out of 5 based on a much smaller review sample of around 130 ratings.

JM Bullion's Trustpilot score has ranged from the high 3s to the low 4s out of 5 across surveys taken at different points in 2026, with review counts in the 1,700 to 2,300 range depending on when the snapshot was pulled.

JM Bullion's ShopperApproved rating, drawn from more than 420,000 individual ratings, sits at 4.8 out of 5, though ShopperApproved surveys tend to skew positive since they're collected immediately after a smooth transaction rather than after a dispute.

Common complaints at both companies cluster around the same two issues: slower processing on personal check payments, and long phone hold times during periods when gold or silver prices move sharply and order volume spikes industry wide. Neither company is unusual in that respect. It's a known pattern across the online bullion business generally.

IRA and Storage Options

Both dealers support precious metals IRAs, but they route customers through different custodians. Provident Metals partners with Preferred Trust Company for self directed IRA accounts.

JM Bullion partners with New Direction Trust Company and stores IRA eligible metal in vaults located in Las Vegas or Dallas, insured through Lloyd's of London.

Neither company acts as the IRA custodian itself; in both cases, you're opening an account with a third party trust company and funding it with metal purchased from the dealer.

Which Dealer Fits You

Choose JM Bullion if you want the largest catalog, the most third party review data to evaluate before you buy, and a $199 free shipping threshold on a wider range of qualifying products.

Choose Provident Metals if you're specifically after its proprietary round designs, you prefer a smaller and more curated site to browse, or your order will land close to the $199 free shipping line and the $2 lower shipping fee at JM Bullion won't move the needle either way.

Either choice keeps your money inside the same corporate family, so the decision comes down to catalog fit and personal preference rather than which company is more trustworthy.

Conclusion

Provident Metals and JM Bullion are sister companies under A-Mark Precious Metals, with nearly identical shipping thresholds and payment discounts but different catalogs and review profiles.

Pick based on which product selection matches what you're buying, not on the assumption that you're choosing between two unrelated competitors.
