Does Etrade Offer a Gold IRA?

Etrade does not offer a Gold IRA that holds physical gold, silver, platinum, or palladium.

The brokerage lets IRA holders buy gold exchange traded funds and gold futures contracts, but it does not act as custodian for physical bullion or coins, and it has no relationship with the IRS approved depositories that a real Gold IRA requires.

At Gold Investor Research, we hear this question often from readers who assume that because Etrade sells stocks, options, and even cryptocurrency, it must also handle physical metals. It does not, and understanding why changes how you should approach opening a Gold IRA in the first place.

Key Points

  • Etrade supports gold ETFs and gold futures inside an IRA, not physical bullion, coins, or bars.
  • Holding physical gold in a retirement account requires a self directed IRA and a specialized custodian, which is where companies like Goldco, Augusta Precious Metals, and Priority Gold come in.

What Etrade Actually Lets You Buy

Etrade's gold exposure comes in two forms: exchange traded funds and futures contracts. Gold ETFs hold physical metal in a vault on behalf of shareholders, and the share price tracks the spot price of gold closely.

You buy and sell them the same way you buy a stock, by searching the ticker and placing an order.

Gold futures work differently. They require a higher account balance, a separate trading approval, and they expose you to leverage and contract expiration dates rather than ownership of metal itself.

Neither option puts a gold coin or bar in your name. You own a paper claim on gold, backed by a fund manager or a futures contract, not a specific bar sitting in a vault with your account number attached to it.

For some investors that distinction does not matter much. For others, particularly those buying gold specifically to hold something outside the banking and securities system, it matters a great deal.

Why Physical Gold Needs a Different Kind of IRA

The IRS allows physical precious metals inside a retirement account, but only through a self directed IRA paired with a qualified custodian and an approved depository.

Standard brokerages such as Etrade, Fidelity, and Schwab are not built to serve as that custodian.

Their retirement platforms are built around securities: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs. Adding vault storage, insurance, and metal purity verification to that model would require a different back office entirely, so most large brokerages simply skip it.

This is not a flaw in Etrade. It also does not mean the metals dealers who do offer this service are automatically more trustworthy.

The two business models solve different problems, and your job is to match the one you use to what you actually want to own.

Gold's Numbers Right Now

Global gold demand hit 1,313 tonnes in the third quarter of 2025, the strongest quarterly total the World Gold Council has recorded.

Central banks bought 220 tonnes of that total, up nearly 30 percent from the prior quarter, and ETF investors added 222 tonnes, the largest quarterly inflow in years.

Bar and coin demand held at 316 tonnes even as prices climbed, while jewelry demand fell for a sixth straight year as buyers balked at higher prices.

The price itself has moved through several milestones since the 2008 financial crisis, when gold first passed $1,000 an ounce. It reached $2,000 during the pandemic, then $3,000 in April 2025 after new tariff announcements unsettled global markets.

It crossed $4,000 later that year during a prolonged federal government shutdown. Goldman Sachs now projects gold could reach $5,400 an ounce by the end of 2026, pointing to central bank purchases running near 60 tonnes a month, well above the bank's earlier estimate of 29 tonnes.

Where to Open a Gold IRA Instead of Etrade

If physical gold in a retirement account is the goal, work with a company built specifically for that purpose. These firms are not banks or brokerages.

They are precious metals dealers who specialize in setting up self directed IRAs, coordinating with a custodian and depository, and helping you choose IRS eligible coins and bars, including popular options like American Gold Eagles, Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, and Austrian Gold Philharmonics.

Below are three companies worth researching, listed in the order our readers ask about them most.

1. Goldco

Goldco has focused on precious metals IRAs since 2006 and holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. The company reports it has placed over $2 billion in gold and silver for customers since its founding, and it typically asks for a minimum investment of $25,000 to open a Gold IRA.

  • Founded in 2006 and headquartered in California
  • A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau
  • Minimum Gold IRA investment commonly cited at $25,000
  • Offers free silver on qualifying deposits and a metals buyback program

"The closest thing to an insurance policy on your finances is a percentage of gold and silver."
Trevor Gerszt, founder and CEO of Goldco, quoted in the San Fernando Valley Business Journal

2. Augusta Precious Metals

Augusta Precious Metals was founded in 2012 by CEO Isaac Nuriani and built its reputation on one on one investor education before any purchase happens.

The minimum investment is $50,000, higher than most competitors, and prospective clients typically meet with Devlyn Steele, a Harvard trained economic analyst, on a personal web conference before deciding anything.

  • Founded in 2012, headquartered in California
  • A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau
  • $50,000 minimum investment
  • Personal web conference with an economic analyst before purchase

3. Priority Gold

Priority Gold opened in 2015 out of Dallas, Texas, and built its name around fast account setup. The company works with Preferred Trust Company for custody services, and its specialists focus on walking first time buyers through the rollover process step by step.

  • Founded in 2015, headquartered in Dallas, Texas
  • A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau
  • Minimum investment around $10,000 for direct purchases, higher for a full IRA rollover
  • Same day account opening in many cases

What to Check Before You Choose

Fees, minimums, and BBB ratings only tell part of the story. Ask each company how storage fees change once your account grows past $100,000, since some flat fee structures stay a bargain and others quietly do not.

Ask what happens to your metal if the company itself closes, since your gold should sit at an independent depository, not inside the dealer's own building. And ask for the buyback price in writing before you fund anything, not after.

Conclusion

Etrade works fine for gold ETFs and futures, but it cannot hold physical bullion inside an IRA.

If owning actual metal is the goal, Goldco, Augusta Precious Metals, and Priority Gold are three specialized companies worth calling before you decide.
