Charles Schwab Gold IRA: Can You Buy Physical Gold Through Charles Schwab?

If you have a Schwab account and you're wondering whether you can move part of it into physical gold for retirement, the short answer is no.

Charles Schwab does not offer a gold IRA, and it will not custody physical bullion inside a retirement account.

You can get gold price exposure through Schwab's ETFs, mining stocks, and mutual funds, but none of that is the same as owning metal you could hold in your hand or store in a vault under your own name.

At Gold Investor Research, we get this question often enough to lay out exactly what Schwab does offer, why it stops short of physical metals, and where investors actually go when they want the real thing in a retirement account.

Key Points

  • Charles Schwab does not offer self directed gold IRAs and will not hold physical gold bars or coins inside any retirement account.
  • Investors who want physical gold in an IRA need a self directed custodian and an IRS approved depository, which is what companies like Goldco, Augusta Precious Metals, and Priority Gold specialize in.

What Schwab Actually Offers When It Comes to Gold

Schwab is a full service brokerage, and it gives clients several ways to bet on the price of gold without ever touching a bar or coin.

These products trade on an exchange, settle instantly, and sit inside a standard brokerage or IRA account the same way a stock or bond would.

Product TypeExamplesPhysical Gold Included?
Gold ETFsSPDR Gold Shares (GLD), iShares Gold Trust (IAU)No, shares track the price
Mining stocksIndividual gold and silver mining companiesNo, equity in a mining business
Precious metals mutual fundsActively managed funds holding mining and metals exposureNo
Futures and optionsGold futures contracts through a Schwab futures accountNo, derivative contract only

Every option on that list gives you price exposure. None of them gives you a deed to metal sitting in a depository with your name on the storage record.

That distinction matters more than it sounds, especially during the kind of volatility gold has seen this year.

Why Schwab Doesn't Get Into Physical Gold IRAs

This isn't an oversight. Physical gold IRAs run on different rules than a normal brokerage account.

The IRS requires gold held inside a retirement account to sit with an approved custodian at an approved depository, not in a home safe or on a brokerage's own balance sheet.

Setting that up means partnering with specialized IRA custodians, arranging insured third party storage, verifying that each coin or bar meets IRS purity standards, and handling a purchase and shipping process that looks nothing like clicking "buy" on a stock.

Schwab built its business on liquid, easily tradable securities. Physical bullion is neither liquid in the same sense nor easy to custody at scale, so Schwab has simply chosen to stay out of that corner of the market. That's a business decision, not a reflection on gold as an asset.

What Gold Is Actually Doing Right Now

Gold spot prices closed near $4,477 per ounce on September 3, 2026, after climbing more than $900 over the prior twelve months.

Prices touched an all time high above $5,590 per ounce in late January 2026 before pulling back, and the metal is still trading well above where it stood at the start of last year.

Over the past five years, gold has returned roughly 145%, compared with about 71% for the S&P 500 over the same stretch (using SPY as the benchmark).

The gold to silver ratio sits near 67, meaning it currently takes about 67 ounces of silver to equal the value of one ounce of gold. None of that guarantees future performance.

But it does explain why more retirement investors are asking about physical metal exposure this year than they were two or three years ago, and why "can I buy gold through Schwab" has become such a common search.

Where We Recommend Looking Instead

Since Schwab isn't an option for physical metal, the next question is which company actually is.

We put together this list based on longevity, transparency, and how each company handles the rollover process from an account like Schwab. We list them in the order we recommend.

1. Goldco

Goldco was founded in 2006 by Trevor Gerszt and is based in Woodland Hills, California. The company has helped clients place more than $3 billion into precious metals and has landed on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing private companies nine years running.

It holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. In 2025, Goldco dropped its minimum investment requirement entirely, a move that opened the door for investors who previously couldn't meet the $25,000 IRA threshold.

Its buyback program is one of the more competitive ones in the industry, which matters if you ever want to liquidate part of your position.

2. Augusta Precious Metals

Augusta launched in 2012 out of Beverly Hills, California, and built its name around education rather than volume sales.

New clients get a one on one web conference with a Harvard trained economist before they commit to anything, which is a different sales model than most of the industry runs.

Money magazine named Augusta its "Best Overall Gold IRA Company," and the company has kept its BBB and Business Consumer Alliance records clean since it opened.

tends to work best for investors putting $50,000 or more into metals who want a slower, more guided process.

3. Priority Gold

Priority Gold has operated out of Dallas since 2001, giving it close to a quarter century in business. It carries an A+ BBB rating built on more than 130 customer reviews and holds a strong Trustpilot score as well.

The company works with custodians like Preferred Trust and Strata Trust to set up IRAs and typically covers first year administration fees, with storage fees waived in the first year for accounts over $50,000.

Priority Gold is also the official precious metals partner of the Texas Rangers and is linked to Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad. Pricing is quote based rather than posted online, so plan on a phone call before you commit to a purchase.

Moving Money From Schwab Into a Gold IRA

If you decide to go this route, the process runs through a rollover rather than a direct transfer of assets. First, you open a self directed IRA with one of the custodians a gold IRA company works with.

Then you initiate either a direct rollover, where funds move custodian to custodian and you never touch the money, or an indirect rollover, where the funds come to you first and you have 60 days to redeposit them to avoid taxes and penalties.

Schwab can process the outgoing transfer on its end, but it won't set up the new account or select your metals.

Once funds land in the new self directed IRA, your gold IRA company handles the coin or bar selection, purchase, and shipment to the depository.

Conclusion

Schwab is a strong brokerage for stocks, ETFs, and paper gold exposure, but it simply doesn't offer physical gold IRAs.

If owning actual metal in your retirement account matters to you, Goldco, Augusta Precious Metals, and Priority Gold are three established options worth calling directly to compar
